Cannabis seeds: Yield and Potency
How many times have you grown a strain only to find out the yield was not what was expected or that the potency was poor? Seed Companies advertise strains using a generalization for descriptions. In reality, there are a number of phenom types that can come from any given strain. These advertised descriptions should only be used as a general guideline when growing as each plant may have needs or traits that vary from the description. I recently encountered a strain that qualifies as such; BLZ Bud. It was given the description as having a very high THC level and a high yield. I got the high yield but the High I got from it was hardly strong at all. For argument’s sake, lets say my growing conditions were ideal, which they were,…my results obviously did not match the results touted on the Breeder’s description…where did I go wrong, you may ask? The fact is, I did nothing wrong and was not too disappointed when I discovered my girl that I had grown for 4 months wasn’t very strong. Anyone growing from seed should expect to have variances from the Breeder’s description due to phenotypes. Sometimes the phenotype grown will be better than expected and sometimes not. How the plant is stressed and under what growing conditions can determine or trigger a particular phenom from the genetics of the strain to become predominant. This should be understood from the start so that the Grower will know ahead of time that the plant being grown may have its own particular needs which may vary from the generalized needs supplied by the Breeder. New Growers should not be discouraged if their particular plant did not grow out as anticipated. Sometimes a review of the grow may show a point in the grow where the plant was stressed too much or perhaps not enough. Sometimes there is nothing different to be done. The point is, phenotypes in strains abound. Knowing ahead of time that the strain you grow from seed may deviate from the norm will save you from being surprised by this. Happy Growing!
